=== FM Percussion Set ===
The OPL3 synthesizes drum sounds using FM synthesis does a combination great job relative to its hardware requirements at reproducing melodic instruments but isn't especially useful for harsh percussion noises like drums. Yamaha provides separate drum noises for this purpose. The programmer has to forfeit three channels of frequency modulation (regular FM) synthesis and bit manipulation, which works as follows:freeing up six operators for five rhythm instruments.
*Bass Drum: Uses FM synthesis between operators to generate A global random level generator is implemented for this mode; it's a lowstandard LFSR just like the noise generator on simple chips like the AY-pitched percussion sound3-8910 or SN76489, so it provides a one-bit semi-random output.*Tom TomThe OPL can then generate: Direct  * a bass drum, which is just another FM noise; * a tom tom, which is the unmodulated output of a single operator, with no modulation; *Snare Drum: Combines a snare drum, which combines the phase of a single operator with the random noise, mimicking a snare's sharpnessbit; *Cymbal: Created by XOR-ing a cymbal which XORs six bits from the phase of two operators, producing a noisy waveform; *Hia high-hat: Similar to , which uses the same XOR as the cymbal, but and combines it with added the random noise for a sharper, metallic soundbit.
