Toki

A quite good Arcade game from TAD Corporation.

Home computer ports were executed by Ocean (famous for this kind of production).

Toki is an unreleased cartridge game for the GX4000 and Plus range of machines.

Two supposed screenshots were shown in Amstrad Action (although they may have been mock-ups). The game is believed to have not been finished.

Some advertisements claimed that the GX4000 cartridge version would be released alongside Amiga and Atari ST ports, but it ended as. The same goes for the ZX Spectrum version, which managed to get pictures in the ZX Spectrum press, but ended as vaporware as well.

The main problem is that this game could have been a bit too ambitious for an 8-bit system. The Commodore 64 port (the only 8-bit home computer port to be released) wasn't that bad at all. But one of the main difficulties was the large and numerous sprites or Bosses used in the Arcade game.

It was coded by David Looker. It is rumoured that one level was running and a larger sized cartridge would be required, but Ocean said "no".

Retro Gamer issue 126 (March 2014) had an article 'The Amstrad CPC Games That Time Forgot' which had a small section on Toki and there was a screenshot of the main character sprites.

GGP announced in 2019 that they were developing a conversion of Toki for the Amstrad CPC. It was eventually released on 29th October 2022 and was rated 88% by Retro Gamer in issue 241.
