Information |
Into Oblivion is a shoot-'em-up by Mastertronic.
Plot
Following the destruction of the evil computer that once ruled this galaxy you must seek the only safe planet to avoid the erratic droids (the evil computers leftover servants) who have been programmed to obliterate you. With 2,500 screens your task is not easy, however, if you do not succeed you will be blown into oblivion by the droids.
Gameplay
You control the 'Seeker MK II' around which allows for exploration of the various screens on each planet. There are various hazardous life forms about (erratic / unpredictable droids and a primitive race of human-like creatures) which you can destroy with your unlimited supply of lasers. Spacecraft exist which can take you to other planets. Be aware of where you have been as it is very easy to get lost - you are going to need a map. Scattered around are various objects that have a certain purpose. Some allow further game progression, others give you extra lives. You only have 9 lives and you will need them as there are 42 planets and 2500 screens! Make sure you have collected enough 'Psyche' units (over 90) and transport them to the legendary 'Safe Planet' in order to complete the game. Will you make it or will the droids blow you into oblivion?. Joystick or keyboard can be used. Good luck!
The Planets
Each planet in the game is named. Here is the list of the 42 planets (no particular order): NONTERRA, QUORRZ, SECRA, SAFRIK, KLYVICK, HICKJRY, HUWVENLY, RESFGER, JINK, ASASZK, YURIOP, STAVEL, DERWINY, IUOPLY, UHGUHG, GOODLZ, SANZA, COMSANRY, COLTURY, CENTURE, CONTACZ, AKREY, BZINDIVE, ATTENZR, WAYZRE, ELTHAMT, STOUTIGE, CHEYLESIX, WICZWIRE, PALACKRY, MONOLARK, SCAPERZ, ALCLSON, DOMERRI, TRESSERIP, PENTONZ, OLPIUYR, GRAPOS 1, GRAPOS 2, GRAPOS 3,THIRSIK 1 and NORAL.
Somewhere in the 2500 screen maze is the safe planet you need to find in order to complete the game.
Ties with Previous Games
- According to the "Aim of the Game" text on the reverse side of the inlay, this game follows on from Nonterraqueous 2 (Soul of a Robot) (after the destruction of the evil computer).
- In this game you must actually collect 'Psyche' - in the previous Nonterraqueous games, you already have 'Psyche'.
- There are 42 planets to explore, in Nonterraqueous there were 42 levels to explore.
- You control the 'Seeker MK II' - the original 'Seeker' was in Nonterraqueous
- One of the planets is named Nonterra.
Critical reception
Amstrad Action gave Into Oblivion an overall rating of 70%, highlighting the large number of screens and the exploration and mapping required to find the safe planet. However, the gameplay was criticized for the lack of excitement from obstacles and enemies.

Map
Although this game claims it has 2500 screens, here is an unfinished game map which shows where the safe planet can be found.
Key:
O = Space ship P = Psyche unit X = Extra Life ∏ = Spacecraft unblock object ∆ = Start Location ◄ ► = Indicates one way only
There is a transporter screen on Nonterra. Extra lives are scattered throughout (marked on map). Temporary shields against droids are scattered throughout (unmarked). There are at least 2 spaceships blocked from being used and they need to be unblocked by a special object (marked on map). The directional arrows on certain screens sort of help you find the safe planet - by indicating if you need to move up or down. Various screens on first entry will be hazardous and take a life from you (unmarked). Each row is essentially a planet - although technically the 'Safe Planet' is just a screen hidden away on an existing planet!
