Excuse me, has anyone proven if this works?

Of course. I made these schemes and I made them after I successfully built a cable that way. There are different wirings on the net, but those didn't work for me. That might depend on the TV set used, but they didn't work for me on two different TV sets, while mine worked on three different TV sets -- SpaceRat 19:54, 15 October 2007 (CEST)

1.5v battery for RGB switching

I don't think you need the 1.5v battery if you're using the "monochrome" cable. In fact, this would be counter-productive because it would switch the TV into RGB mode when you're trying to feed it a composite video signal.
